The large scale study of winged bipeds and human mimics, circa 1896

One of the many fascinating and abhorrent traits of Homo sapien is our baffling arrogance when considering our place amongst other species. We look to the great apes and can literally see the similarities (and now thanks to modern genetics, know that the link is far deeper than mere aesthetic) and yet those subtle nuances allow us to stand proud and tall on our pedestal and dictate how other life should fall below us, or at least be subjected to our every whim.

However, humans are of course not the only species on this planet to be humanoid, part of the hominid family or indeed bear a striking resemblance to us. Bipedal humanoid life on the earth is indeed rare, even more so in the last 2000 years, thanks to the aforementioned Homo Sapien. Like so many species we know little about, our lack of knowledge can lead to some curious ideas. Those who think of tiger bone as a remedy for ailments, is now a species on the brink of extinction, an incredibly sad product of ignorance and wishful thinking. This process has seen many of the lesser species of Homomimus become pestle and mortar fodder, their tiny frames relegated to pointless apothecary. Populations of Winged Homomimus plummeted during the dark ages, caught like butterflies and eaten alive or steeped in boiling water to cure a myriad of pustules, sores and blisters on the malnourished peasants of Europe. The Wingless Homomimus, Larva non volucris, bizarre miniature humans, whose anatomy beggars belief in its similarity to our own, were often kept as pets, trained to hunt mice and rats in rich homes, those who escaped these unpleasant existences living off the scraps of humanity, far from their natural hives in dark woods, and bore legends of faerie folk who’d borrow and never give back.

But Homomimus was not the only species of tiny folk. The wastes of northern Norway and Lapland were home to the Homunculi, a species of pygmy hominid, that stood at around 18 inches tall. These nocturnal creatures lived in subterranean cave systems, and fed on roots and stems. They were also hunted to extinction by humans eager to own trophies of Elves and Dwarves.

Of the less humanoid are Homo Vespertilius Chiropterus, one of the very view membranous winged mammals outside the Bat family. This species are aggressive carnivores, hunting in flocks of many hundreds in the Amazon. Their teeth are razor like shards of bone, attacking en masse and inflicting hundreds of tiny wounds each a lethal bite – their saliva riddled with fatal viruses.

There are a few arthropod like human mimics, although anatomically the similarities are vague. Homomimus Arachnida, and Malacostraca are two examples. These crustacean like animals have strong leathery exo skeletons and in some cases, they are winged, yet differ greatly from the winged Homomimus and sport membranous wings like that of a dragonfly.

These specimens are presented in a large fine study case, 28 inches x 26 inches x 10 inches, housing many specimens, annotated illustrations and apparatus for the study of our various human like minutiae. Owned by Thomas Merrylin, specimens collected by Hoxton Butcher, Merrylin himself and the esteemed naturalist Doris S. Gerbeltod.

I am fascinated by what I find in some the crates within the collection. Many days I find specimens that have failed the test of time and disintegrate in my hands, but then there are days when tiny little creatures such as this little guy, who sit strong in their glass coffins. This fetus is marked “Still born, 1826, Merrylin.” So I assume from this that Merrylin possibly collected this himself, either by unscrupulous means, (he often grave dug, believe it or not, if the need arose, if not him, then one of his lackeys, mainly for sacrifices to alien deities.) Or he purchased it from one of his many sources.
This tiny fetus is presented in a slightly warped glass specimen jar. It is entirely intact, I have no idea of its age at death, but it has a curious forlorn look to it.

A species that once graced the plains of Mesopotamia long before the arrival of Homo sapien, Homo Lupus are one of two divergent symbiotic hominids, descended from a common ancestor, most likely early groups of Neanderthal. Homo Lupus were large wolf like omnivores- both males and females growing to around 7 ft. They had a matriarchal society, very similar to that of Bonobos chimps, yet there is evidence that they developed advanced civilization, and are perhaps responsible for the precursor to the birth of agriculture. They are the origin of the “werewolf” myth, but supernatural they are not. The species carries an Immuno-efficient pathogen, one that can indeed infect other hominids. This virus carries genetic information, which can lead to a traumatic augmentation of bone, muscle and skin tissue. In most cases infection kills the host. Most Lycanthrope were born, much like any other mammal. What remains of their species in the 21st century is conjecture. Edward Harrell spent a great deal of his life studying the remaining populations of Lycanthrope in the forests of Scandinavia around 1820, and he himself became infected with the Lupus viral strain. He took many trophies, yet this head was not owned by him. Merrylin acquired this from Hoxton Butcher, the infamous poacher, tradesman and big game hunter. Its unknown how he came across this specimen, yet he bragged he took on this adult male bare fist, which is highly unlikely considering Hoxton suffered from obesity, and a mild heart condition.

I have set up a new facebook page, which will be updated regularly, with images and tales of intrigue pertaining to the collection, in an effort to discuss various aspects of our work with the specimens, future projects and exhibitions. This will be a little more hands on than this website, which is an archive of specimens and allows us to create more awareness of each piece. I will post diary entries from Merrylins own hand, and various other anecdotes for those at all interested, as we climb down the rabbit hole to see where it leads…

“A specimen of a very young Draco Alatus”

Although at first I thought that this was a rare pigmentation in the species Draco Alatus (in folklore the dragon), looking over previous specimens, it appears that the darker skin tones were apparently rarer and lead me to believe that albinism was indeed a common genetic trait, most probably the result of inbreeding. Having analyzed tissue samples we ascertained that the low survival rate of Draco Alatus in the last 400 years was mainly due to a very small gene pool. The species was apparently hunted to the brink of extinction and the few that remained, were very closely related, genetically as close as first cousins, and therefor gave rise to infant death, bizarre pigmentation changes and growth abnormality like that of wild Cheetahs in modern Africa.

We can tell from its size that it was only days out of the egg before it died of massive organ failure. Dwarfism and gigantism are common afflictions in inbred individuals, and sadly most of the specimens in the Merrylin collection, apart from two large adolescents and partial specimens of adult dragons, suffer these very young deaths. Dragons alive in the 19th century were isolated in Nepal, in the Himalayas, the only large vertebrate to survive the KT extinction. Evolutionary changes in the 65 million years were mostly in size, agility and intelligence, modern dragons were sapient, problem solving animals, like that of chimps and dolphins, they had complex social groups, courting rituals and nest building abilities, their parenting and nurturing also intricate. Up until around 40,000 years ago, they were one of the largest carnivores on earth, and were perhaps one of the only species to actively hunt early humans, alongside nocturnal hominids. The tables turned as humans developed more advanced hunting techniques, and took advantage of the Dracos slow learning to oppose the encroachment of man on all other species and their territory. The ice age also devastated the Draco population. Evolution had not prepared this species for dramatic temperature changes, and although warm blooded, and very bird like in their anatomy, lacked any form of insulation, their lithe, bodies stored little fat and they starved to death if not from pneumonia. A tragic story for such a majestic creature.

However, Merrylin did discover an enclave of many individuals still surviving in Nepal. These animals had human caretakers, and were deified. They apparently appeared healthy and not too stricken by inbreeding.
